چکیده

In this paper, we propose a robust delay estimation scheme for Internet multimedia applications. The proposed scheme adopts an autoregressive (AR) model for the delay process. The adopted AR model is a natural generalization of the Jacobson’s algorithm in TCP retransmission timeout (RTO) estimation. However, unlike fixed parameter values in the Jacobson’s algorithm, the parameters of the proposed scheme adapt themselves to the estimation error via a robust identification algorithm. This robust identification algorithm usually leads to better performance when the noise is correlated and/or non-stationary, and it is also more robust to modeling uncertainties. As an application of the proposed algorithm, we consider the problem of delay prediction for audio playout buffering. We rigorously formulate the proposed scheme in the realm of multimedia audio mechanisms and give simulation result which shows its effectiveness. q 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Jitter-free Audio Playout over Best Effort Packet Networks

The aim of this research is to explore important issues in playout of audio over best effort audio networks and the improvements that can be made at the upper layers without changing the underlying network. This paper starts with a review of existing methods, the experiments conducted based on them and comments on their performance. The point of departure is the modification to the autoregressi...

Robust Playout Mechanism for Internet Audio Applications

In Internet audio applications, delay and delay jitter affect applications' quality of service mostly. Since packet delays are different and changing over time, the receiver needs to buffer some amount of packets before playout. Therefore, the amount of buffered packets and timing of playout are very important for the performance of the applications. Here we adopt an auto-regressive (AR) model ...

Adaptive playout scheduling and loss concealment for voice communication over IP networks

The quality of service limitation of today’s Internet is a major challenge for real-time voice communications. Excessive delay, packet loss, and high delay jitter all impair the communication quality. A new receiver-based playout scheduling scheme is proposed to improve the tradeoff between buffering delay and late loss for real-time voice communication over IP networks. In this scheme the netw...

Robust Delay Estimation for Internet Multimedia Applications

Traffic estimation and modeling has been a crucial issue in many research areas of communication networks. For example, intermediate routers in networks estimate the rate of packet flows via queue size information in order to maximize throughput and provide fairness between flows. Also, many senders in the end system such as multimedia applications estimate end-to-end delay between a sender and...

Adaptive delay estimation for low jitter audio over Internet

Real time voice applications typically produce uniformly spaced voice packets and faithful reconstruction demands that these be played out at the same intervals. Best effort packet networks, however, produce variable delays on different packets and the receiver is required to buffer the received packets before playout. Excessive buffering delays deteriorate the system performance for interactiv...
